the Grange

On Sunday, it was warm but completely overcast. It was cool lighting so I took the 3 kids that were with me (Lilli was with my very generous and wonderful sister) to this grange I found.

What is a grange, you say? I have no idea.. but it made for some cool pictures.

(I realize that here, Rori has a touch of Frodo in her.)

They were pretty cooperative, walking around this space for me, artistically. It helped pass a Sunday evening anyway.

So if you can tell me what a grange is, in 3 words or less, you win a most wondrous prize.

an outlying farm

George April 28, 2008 at 8:43 PM

A form of manor used by certain monastic orders to manage outlying lands. The grange substitutes a grange complex for the manor house, lay brethren for the lord or bailiff and his household, and servants for the free and unfree peasants of an ordinary manor. Since it is wholly controlled by the monastic house, with no conservative peasants to act as obstacles to change by citing tradition and precedent, it allows the land to be managed and worked more efficiently, to the benefit of the holder. The transformation of a manor into a grange is not necessarily a happy event for the manor's tenants, since they are usually evicted, sometimes being forced by circumstances to become the paid servants who work the grange, but with little or no job security.

Thank you, George, I feel educated now!
Randi - I absolutely love your photography! Thank you for sharing so much of it. And what a treat to be able to include your kids in so much of it.
I wish I could send some of our warm weather your way. I think it was 93 or something today. Can't wait to get out of here!

gathering place farmers.

I wanted to say a gathering place for farmers, but it was three word max; that's what granges are in america. And if my answer really is better than george's no playing favorites cause he's your buddy!

I have lots of good memories of that grange. I mentioned to you how they used to have jewelry sales there in the summer. It was awesome to actually be able to walk to some type of business from my country based house.

Great to see you today. Your kids are awesome.

George - Way to go. You can copy from Wikapedia.
